exp – algorithm and sound

via vimeo: http://vimeo.com/11929023

frank bretschneider is one of those who are always thinking visually when they are making sound. trained as a graphic designer he is always redefining the relationship between music and images. together with his collegues olaf bender (byetone) and carsten nicolai (alva noto) he is running the label raster-noton since 1996. with his new album callded “exp”  he also creates a collective universe of sound and video.

“EXP explores this concept [interaction of sound and video] with an 18 minute video, which uses particle algorithms to generate oscilloscope-like renderings of the album’s tracks. abstract and mesmerizing, the visuals perfectly match the scientific approach of the album, for which bretschneider has used sounds of mechanics, electricity, magnetism, light and other radiation as sources for his microscopic samples.”

I bumped on the website of the artist and musician brock davis. a further research on his person showed that he’s a creative director at the well-known advertising agency carmichael lynch. the images in the post are part of his work called “make something cool every day”. so in 2009 he designed every day one thing with the result of 365 design pieces. to see all 365 pieces just have a look on his website: http://itistheworldthatmadeyousmall.com/

in a way the work of  brock davis also reflects the idea of pop-up. creativity is always been dynamic. with his work he’s exploring the dynamic process of creativity. it is all about catching all this small ideas which pop-up in your mind and give them something real right in the moment.

pictograms

todays post is fitting well with the international worker’s day, concerning the movement of the creativ class nowadays. in the museum of applied arts in vienna (mak) there is a current exhibition on otto neurath, an austrian philosopher who developed the isotype (englisch: international system of typographic picture education; deutsch: internationales system der erziehung durch bilder) together with the german graphic artist gerd arntz. back to the 20’s of the 20th century otto neurath was a supporter of the idea that images can be more helpful to understand a meaning than words. in other words through the whole spectrum of colours and their emotional meaning or through different types of textures, images can express a deeper emotional understanding. for a lot of people otto neurath is considered as the founder of the pictograms. more details check gerd arntz or otto neurath

some examples of their work
